Seth Holden of Bolton
« on: Thursday 18 January 18 22:24 GMT (UK) »
Dear Friends, would highly appreciate your help on Seth Holden a "Bolton Hero", who was famous local strongman (weight lifter) and champion wrestler in the early 1840's. His primary occupation was a saddler (master of stirrups and leather). Thanks in advance. Kind regards, R

What sort of information do you want, and what else have you discovered about him?

Have you done a basic internet search?

Birth/Death/Marital status. I am registered on BNA and trying to find more of his wrestling results, but I figured he was quite active in other sports...and any sort of contests including "singing" hahaha

I am assuming between 1815 and 1820. In 1841 he was already well known in the local sporting circles.

You say he was a Saddler - is this his Marriage ??  Holden / Holding - common in those days for slight spelling differences - notes say Seth was Illegitimate ..

Marriage: 19 Dec 1844 St Peter, Bolton, Lancashire, England
Seth Holding - Full, Saddler, Bachelor, Great Bolton
Mary Kirkman - Full, Spinster, Great Bolton
     Bride's Father: William Kirkman, Farmer
     Witness: Thomas Kay; James Liptrot
Married by Licence by: J Slade Vicar
Notes: ['Illegitimate' is written in the groom's father's name column]
     Register: Marriages 1844 - 1845, Page 77, Entry 154
Source: Microfilm of the register at Manchester Library

...........................................................................................
the only illegitimate Seth Holding I can find in the time frame is
Baptism: 6 Nov 1814 Parish Church, Coppull, Lancashire, England
Seth Holding - Son of Ellen Holding
     Abode: Coppul
     Occupation: Spinster
     Baptised by: Jos. Taylor
     Register: Baptisms 1813 - 1833, Page 10, Entry 75
     Source: LDS 1849656

..............................
Coppull to Bolton is 14 miles by road today
something for you to look at anyway - he may be your man ???

yeah that looks like it could be him, he was a saddler, interesting Holding=Holden, huh, makes sense, and age is matching his sporting records, b. 1814, married 1844, and yeah he was already well known in 1841. Were you able to locate his date of  death?

He seems to have gone off to NY !
Go to:
http://www.fultonhistory.com/Fulton.html

and using "the exact phrase" from the drop-down list- type in his name as "Seth Holding".
