Thomas Carter ALLEN - Wimbourne
« on: Friday 19 January 18 17:54 GMT (UK) »
Hello, I'm wondering if anyone can help me with baptism records for Wimbourne please? (I can't find any records online and there is no opc for Wimbourne).

I am trying to find a baptism for Thomas Carter ALLEN.  I don't even have an estimated dob for him, but he married Jane MITCHELL on 6 July 1796 at Wimbourne Minster by Licence.  Both bride and groom were described as otp.

He lived in Portsea in Hampshire at some point (I have him there in c.1794) but other research leads me to believe that he was born in Wimbourne.  In 1801 he was in Fleet Prison for debt.

Any help gratefully received.

Ancestry have the records, he doesn't show up in a search, you could trawl through yourself and see if his baptism was missed in the indexing.

You don't say what other evidence you have for him being born in Wimborne, being OTP on marriage doesn't necessarily indicate being born there.

Thank you nanny jan and Jebber for your advice.
I didn't go into all the details about why I think he was born in Wimbourne as it's quite a complicated piece of research and I am quite confident it is thorough and I've got the right man.
I agree that being otp doesn't mean he was born in the parish, but other stuff leads me to think he comes from there or somewhere close by.  Unfortunately he doesn't seem to make it to the 1841, let alone the 1851!!

Thanks again,
Melbell

What happened after the marriage?   Did they have children and if so where?

Was just going to post  and ask the same about any children

If they did, perhaps naming patterns may give a clue to his father

Perhaps Carter was his mother’s maiden name  :-\

Who witnessed their marriage?

Hi Annette and Ladyhawk

Thank you for your interest.

I have been trying to find children of the marriage, the couples' deaths/burials, etc.  Marriage witnesses give no obvious clues.

It's all proving quite difficult, but I am beavering away at the problem!

There is a Thomas Carter Allen born in Stepney in 1895 and various possible deaths in Portsea and Wimborne, but nothing to give me a real clue at present.

Came across mention of Thomas in another persons research, it says their William Rook started a 7yr apprenticeship as bricklayer/ stone mason around 1794 in Portsea and his master was Thomas Carter Allen.

Hi jusnoneed

Yes, I know all about this, thank you.  In fact, I am researching ALLEN because of his connection with William ROOK.

By the way, I would advise people not to use the Rook website at present as it's infected with dangerous malware.

Kind of you,
Melbell
