Looking for Joseph Bowles/Boules
« on: Saturday 20 January 18 13:54 GMT (UK) »
I haven't been able to find anything much on my 5th grt grandfather. Apart from his marriage and subsequent children's baptisms.

His marriage is:
Joseph Bowles married Elizabeth Webb 19 Oct 1800 Fulbourn, Cambs.
They have 3 children between 1801 and 1806 and then Joseph Seems to disappear, There is a no record of a death for Jospeh Bowles but in 1818 and 1821 Elizabeth Bowles baptises 2 sons but doesnt give fathers name. Her and her sons later go on to live with a John Kirk and adopt his surname so I assume those were his children with Elizabeth as she changes her surname to Kirk but there is no marriage between them.

There is a curious marriage in Fulbourn 1828 between a Joseph Bowles 'Singleman' and a Mary Buttriss. This doesn't seem to be Joseph's son (My 4th grt grandfather) Joseph Thomas Bowles as he marries Elizabeth Peachey in 1830 and is listed as a Bachelor.

Perhaps Joseph was from out of County as there is no record of Bowles in Fulbourn before the Marriage and none in Cambs for a Joseph I dont think. Apart from a Baptism in Parson Drove 1765 but that Joseph looks to have married and died in Wisbech.

Are there any records for Fulbourn  concerning parish relief, Elizabeth may have needed help if Joseph left/went to prison/died.
If the family worked the land, they may have needed assistance as a family in the winter when work was scare.
Quite a gap between 1806 and 1818.

Cambridgeshire Record Office should be able to help.

So could possibly be my 4th grt grandfather Joseph Thomas Bowles as he could have married her first then married Elizabeth Peachey in 1830 but if it is why listed as bachelor.
I’ve been told that there could possibly be a settlement cert for Joseph Bowles if he wasn’t from Fulbourn as it seems he wasn’t. Not sure where I can view them.
He also doesn’t seem to have been a convict as I can’t see and record for a Joseph Bowles fitting him.
So it seems he really has disappeared.

I had both those thoughts also (settlement/convict) but couldnt find anything.

I dont think that was a 1st Marriage for Joseph Thomas.
