John William Brown 1882-1946
« on: Saturday 20 January 18 20:46 GMT (UK) »
I'm stuck attempting to trace this JWB born q4 1882 Leeds (9b 419?), who married Harriet Styles 24/12/1905. He may well be the same JWB who enlists with the 3rd West Yorkshire 22/6/1900 & transfers to Gloucestershire Regiment on 06/07/1900 giving father's name John (deceased cloth weaver according to marriage certificate) of 109 Hunslet Lane and Aunt Sarah Brown also of Hunslet Lane as next of Kin. I'm attempting to find 1891 census record for any of those above, 1901 census record for father and/or aunt with no success so far. I can't find 109 Hunslet Lane despite becoming bleary eyed attempting to decipher census returns district by district...Anybody got a better idea, please? (I have the 1911 & 1939 details/dob & dod from Liversedge MI; it's his dad's lineage I'm after!)

No mothers maiden name in index.

So its either illegible or his mum was unwed.

According to FindMyPast there are two Hunslet Lanes in 1901, one in Leeds and one in Hunslet. Not only do neither of them have a 109, there is no one called Brown living in any of the houses listed.

I'd try Hunslet LAne in the 1891 next. RG 12/3683   pages 21-26, 113-114.

Then have a "walk" along the 1901 Hunslet Lane to see what it does after house number 99 if someone can provide the piece/folio numbers.

Otherwise, you'll have to buy the 1882 birth certificate to get at least one parent out of it.
You can search the 1881 by address, and look for Sarah Brown, the parent(s) sibling.

Many thanks to all contributors; I'm slowly following up. The South East Leeds birth certificate causes me further confusion and may well not be for "my" JWB! This JWB born 16th November, registered 28th December, 1882. Mother "Margaret Ann Brown - Chip Chopper" of 24 Brook Street where JWB born. According to 1881 & 1891 census returns, 24 Brook Street was occupied by a McQue/McCue family of whom there was a Margaret Ann (25) married to a Martin (33) and a John William McCue born 1882...

Can anyone further enlighten me, please? As yet no Margaret Ann Brown traced.

JWB is proving somewhat elusive: his wedding & death record and 1939 Register all support his birth in 1882...1911 census 1883 but could easily be late 1882, hence my settling upon the Leeds q4 1882 9b 419 record. Unfortunately the bc gives 16/11/1882 whereas the 1939 Register gives 14/10/1882. I understand that even the 1939 can have incorrect dob info, but from what I've seen it's "usually" by 1 year (exactly...) but others may have different views?
Subsequently I've been told that "my" JWB was abandoned as a child and brought up in the Workhouse. Scrutiny of 1891 123 Beckett Street does have a John Wm Brown, age 11, born Leeds. I can't find any JWB in 1881 records for what I presume is the same Moral & Industrial Training School but I'm not sure. Can anyone further enlighten me as to what other "registers" there might be to better pinpoint (ever hopeful) his arrival in and departure from said institution or similar, please?

I've also attempted to locate the "William Henry Brown & Sarah Jane" in the hope that this couple might lead to JWB's father but that search uncovered both the above on their 2nd marriage and WHB's father an Iron Master who appears to have died before 1851 without any son named "John" being apparent, but I could well have missed something crucial, again....
