The Mystery Mrs Hood from Scarborough Arriving Leamington Spa 1872?
« on: Sunday 21 January 18 00:55 GMT (UK) »
Hello

I have discovered a mystery Mrs Hood (Scarborough) arrival to 1 Clarendon Place, Leamington Spa, Warwickshire. Arrival date not given, but published in the Leamington Spa newspaper 3rd August 1872.

Mary Ann Hood, Widow, who died 2nd August 1872 at Leamington Priors
Executors:-
George Bell Rothera of Nottingham, Solicitor.
Willoughby Willey of Leamington Warwickshire, Grocer.

HOOD.-On the 2nd ult., at her residence, Clarendon Place, Leamington, Mary Ann, widow of the late James Hood, Esq., formerly of Berston, near Nottingham, aged 70 years.

According to the Deaths notice and Sale of Household Furnishings, Mary Ann Hood's address was 1 Clarendon Place, Clarendon Square, Leamington Spa.

Hoping with the late Mrs Hood's address, her late husband's name James Hood formerly of Beeston, Nottingham, it might be possible to discover the Scarborough connection, please?

I can't find any children born to this couple - unless they moved out of Beeston.

But seems unlikely - there is this

Sophia HOOD or WALKER bapt. 12 Dec 1819 Beeston
Father: James Hood Sr. - gentleman
Mother: Mary Walker - servant

There is another couple (Thomas & Elizabeth Hood, he was born Loughborough) who baptise a few children in Beeston c1820's with names including James & Mary Ann - possibly related.

I looked to see if Mary Ann Hood was in any family trees on Ancestry, as Hood not Hodges.

Someone has a different Mary Ann, so this is nothing to do with your family, but there is a daughter in that tree called Labia.  This is possibly Leabia, but she died and married as Labia, as did one or two others.

Why?  Or is it just me that finds this a very unfortunate name to bear?

Hello

Thanks Claire, BEESTON, Stapleford and Long Eaton etc., were near the Derby to Nottingham road.

Previous to 1811 a George Hood of Derby, was part of Clayton and Company, NOTTINGHAM, Iron and Brass Founders, (George Hood, John Clayton and Thomas Copeland).

Clayton and Hood
Mary Hood of Walkingham/Walkeringham, Nottinghamshire (Will 1795) - Dorothy Clayton, Spinster and Ann Simpson, Widow were her Daughters.

In 1809, probably the same George Hood of Derby was part of Sylvester and Hood, Manufacturers in Zinc, (Charles Sylvester and George Hood).

Regarding James Hood born Loughborough.

Got a feeling I have read about the Hoods of Loughborough and some English connections.

Found this publication about the Dunwoody and Hood Families, which mentions some Hood and Hodd in Leicestershire p.74 to p.80, then deals with U.S.
