Margaret Ann DAVIES
« on: Sunday 21 January 18 00:56 GMT (UK) »
My great-great grandmother was Margaret Ann Davies. This has been a brick wall for 18 years now - please help!

Here's what I know about her:
Born - 13 May 1883 (source: 1939 register)
Father - John Davies (from marriage certificate)
Place of birth - Blaenrhondda (from 1911 census, and also 1901 census)
Died Jul-Sep 1949 (age 66)

In 1901 I think she was working in Ferndale as a servant (age 17). She married William Henry Rowley in Ferndale in 1902, so this makes sense. In 1911 her age is stated as 28, though I'm hoping this is an error, as she wouldn't have been 28 until May if the birth date I have for her is correct...

I have scoured the 1891 census, but cannot find a definite match, and can't find any baptism records.

I think I've narrowed it down to 4 possible matches for births in the Apr-Jun quarter of 1883:
Merthyr Tydfil 11a 509
Pontypridd 11a 364
Pontypridd 11a 395
Merthyr Tydfil 11a 536
(assuming they registered her birth promptly...)

Does anyone have any suggestions other than ordering one at a time and keeping fingers crossed please?!

Thanks  :)
Katherine

I had a similar problem trying to track down one of my Davies from Glamorgan and wrote to Pontypridd Register Office giving them all the details I had (including father's occupation) and enclosing a £10 cheque and SAE.   I included my telephone & email details, and they came up trumps within a day.

Very impressive considering I didn't know the year of birth (it varied on different documents), and the day & month of birth I had were also wrong (I had 2nd March but she was actually born 29 Feb).

Start with the earliest evidence of her -

"...She married William Henry Rowley in Ferndale in 1902..."

Can you scan the marriage certificate and post it here for us to see.

Have you looked at the GRO Index for those Birth Regs?

Mothers maiden names in brackets;

DAVIES, MARGARET  ANN  (GRIFFITHS)
GRO Reference: 1883  J Quarter in MERTHYR TYDFIL  Volume 11A  Page 509

DAVIES, MARGARET  ANN  (BEACHOM)
GRO Reference: 1883  J Quarter in PONTYPRIDD  Volume 11A  Page 364

DAVIES, MARGARET  ANN  (CANNON)
GRO Reference: 1883  J Quarter in PONTYPRIDD  Volume 11A  Page 395

DAVIES, MARGARET  ANN  (DAVIES)
GRO Reference: 1883  J Quarter in MERTHYR TYDFIL  Volume 11A  Page 536

With the last one a Davies may have married a Davies or she is illeg.

I did search for marriages 1871-1883 under Cannon/Beacham in Glamorganshire but no matching spouse was a John Davies.

The Griffiths one is a nightmare :D

That is a good idea - I will email them, thank you. With the date of birth and father's name, hopefully it should be quite easy. At the FRC years ago if your certificate didn't match they'd say so and you paid a minimal search fee. I'm not 100% sure if it's Pontypridd or Merthyr T for Blaenrhondda, but Ferndale is Pontypridd so I'll take a guess!

Thanks Trish, that's a good way of getting round it. How did you find the mother's maiden names?

If I can match these up to pairs in the census this could help to eliminate people too!

I'm not 100% either, although I think Pontypridd is the more likely.  The one I was after was for an Aberdare birth and was originally registered at Merthyr Tydfil, but as the districts had changed over time the register is now held at Pontypridd.
