Deciphering an occupation

Would anyone be able to hazard a guess at what this man's occupation was?

He was aged 45 in the 1841 Census and living in a rural location.

There is one other the same on the page with a couple more just the initials F S

It would help if you gave us the census reference so we can see the other pages.  FS that you mention would be Female servant,  That looks like Cl orCh :-\

CL would probably be Clerk

The occupation for the 45 year old looks like "cl" with a heavier dash downward stroke through it.  Agree with "clerk".
