What happened to Fanny Carroll
« on: Sunday 21 January 18 18:46 GMT (UK) »
Hi All,
My ancestor was originally Fanny Gould b.1844 in Stanford Rivers, Essex. She married Henry William Carroll in 1863. Her husband died in 1890, she was living at 308 New North Road, Islington on the 1891 census and in 1893 she was still there according to the Electoral Register. After that I can find nothing (death, re marriage etc). 1891 also shows a 5 year old daugther by the same name but I can't find a birth or anything else for her. Any ideas?
Cheers ;D

My guess would be that although the electoral roll was published in 1893 it was compiled earlier and the death wasn't registered until the final quarter of 1892.

O.k that seems possible, had seen that death but previously discounted it. Maybe problem solved. Thanks

Re the daughter there is a Canadian passenger list from April 1896 showing a 10 year old of that name  on the Parisien - final destination  Stratford, Ontario. This information seems to be confirmed in the Home Children records in the Canadian archives.

have searched all over but no Fanny Carroll b 1886 {Daug} tried for different names with mothers maiden name Gould and with variations but like you no luck.
Saw 1892 death but like you wasn't sure cos of electoral roll forgot roll was done in October before
was a couple of workhouse entries might have been births

Thanks William, this is another record I have seen and wondered about. Do you think Fanny Jnr was taken in by Fanny Snr rather than being her natural daughter? As I can't find a birth record I thought this a possibility.
Cheers

In the 1895 PO Directory (and 1895 electoral register) the occupant of 308 New North Road is listed as John Lowing. Presumably he is the nephew listed there in the 1891 census.
