From RH11/45/2/157 (National Archives of Scotland) , Court Book of Kilwinning, Ayrshire. Noticed when searching for other Ayrshire surname with connection to Coleraine.

John Thomsone merchand in Coleraine, county of Antrim , Kingdom of Ireland, .....Robert Fergushill portioner of Auchin....., .... John Thomsone his sone.....

Details a bond (dated 14/8/1675 ) between the two. Have not transcribed the document but can copy to anyone interested.

John Thomson was elected a Burgess of Coleraine Corporation on 13 September 1681.

... and Coleraine is actually in Co Londonderry, not Co Antrim!

Coleraine was in Co Coleraine until 1613 (I think) before it became part of the Newly established Co Londonderry.

I am not sure if the boundaries were redefined when it became part of Derry, so possibly somewhere that was once part of Co Coleraine, became part of Co Antrim and so used the term Coleraine, Co Antrim when describing it?

The liberties of Coleraine on the east bank of the Bann were originally in Co Antrim and were added to Co Coleraine along with part of Co Donegal and Co Tyrone to form the new Co Londonderry in 1613.

My concern is that people looking for Coleraine families will be looking on the Co L'derry board rather than here on the Co Antrim board and may miss this.

Topic moved to Derry(Londonderry).

Such being an important consideration for folks with ancestors from the parishes of Ballywillan and Ballyrashane.  Each abuts the parish of Coleraine in County Londonderry, but also includes townlands to the East lying within County Antrim, across the County boundary.
