Bernard MICHEN, Born 1836 assumed Edinburgh
« on: Monday 22 January 18 14:24 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I have little definitive detail for Bernard MICHEN, except he was sentenced at the Edinburgh High Court on 03/06/1850 to 7 years transportation but eventually released on licence from Parkhurst Prison on 30/01/1854.   His records state that on release he was being apprenticed to Mr. J. Pring of Newport, Isle of Wight, as a seaman on a collier brig.

I can find absolutely no other information for him and in fact the only reference to a MICHEN is in the 1841 Scotland Census in Lanarkshire......no connection!!

Can anyone help please with any details whatsoever. ???

What a pain for you  :-\

Freecen is also a good place to search for early 1841 and 1851 censuses.

There is a Bernard MEECHAN, aged 7 born outside of the county (Midlothian).

This entry shows at the Children's hospital in Edinburgh. Likely best with this type of surname to search with wildcards such as *m*ch*n for example. There are also entries showing for McMeech*n.

In the Children's Hospital in 1841, there is a further entry for a John Meechan, aged 9 and also born out of the county of Midlothian.

Thank You Monica,

The idea of "MEECHAN" is well worth a widespread search.   No results as yet except the 1841 FreeCEN index you suggested.

I have tried various other adaptations, MITCHIN and MICHIN  but no glimmer of hope yet, sadly.   C'est la genealogie ::)

What about trying Meehan?

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Parkhurst Prison

B.M.    Prisoner    14    Whipmaker    Unknown

Hi,

You may have already seen this but just in case  :)

I think this is him,

UK, Apprentices Indentured in Merchant Navy, 1824-1910

Bernard MITCHEN
Age:  16
Date of Indenture:  29 June 1854
Date of Enrolment of Indenture:  06 Jul 1854
Term for which Bound:  4
Indenture Expires:  29 June 1858
Names and Residences of Parties to whom Bound:  Samuel PRING, Newport
Name, Port Belonging to and Burden of Vessel in which the Apprentice is to serve:  Triton  212
Number and Date of Register:  3/1844
Port at which Indenture was Enrolled:  Cowes

All the "Indenture Expires" dates have a red line through them.

So still no POB. It says on his prison records that he reads well and can write a little, so he has some education so for "not known" for POB and for "Residence of Convicts Family or Next of Kin",  I wonder if he knew where he was born, maybe he was an orphan on the streets :-\
