Emma Rigden born 1851?
« on: Monday 22 January 18 14:37 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone this is the latest of many brick walls I'm trying to,knock down.

Emma Rigden was born in 1851 Dover Kent. She can be found on the 1861census with her mother Charlotte and half brothers census ref St Mary’s 105/548/58/22
Also on the 1871 census Ewell 7/58/1012/16/12
Her mother, Charlotte Fagg had a very interesting life. She married Thomas Matcham in 1837. she married William Rigden in October 1851and he died in November 1851. she can be found on the 1851 census listed as a widow living next door to William Rigden 49/1632/191/10. Charlotte then went on to marry for the third time in 1864. All marriages can be viewed on Findmypast parish records.
My questions are who are the parents of Emma Rigden as neither of Charlotte’s surnames are listed against any Emma Rigden born in this time frame.
When was she born? Which is the correct Emma so I can order the correct birth certificate?
I have not found a baptism for her yet.

Thanks for your help

So she wasn't born at the 1851 census, and she is aged ( Insert here) in 1861.

Please don't assume that everyone will have access to the same records, you've already seen 'em, so why not transcribe for the query.

You've said Emma was b 1851, and you've looked under rigden. Why rigden when a child of that brief marriage wouldn't be born until mid-1852?

Thanks for the information you have found. So it looks like Charlotte and William used the surname Matcham to baptise their daughter at St Mary’s and then got married a month later at Chalton church. Interesting enough that her first husband is still alive and did not die to 1854although she lists herself as a widow.
I will send for this birth certificate to see if any information is given regarding the father.

Thanks

Do you have a death for Thomas? If he died before 1851 then Emma is probably William's child. If he died during 1851 Thomas could well be her father.

Sorry just read your reply that Thomas didn't die until 1854.
