Austin Frederick Rodgers & Edith Mary Wells, married 1/10/1909 S. Africa
« on: Monday 22 January 18 17:13 GMT (UK) »
Austin Frederick Rodgers (sometimes spelt Rogers) born 1885 Street, Somerset  was single in 1901 according to his "Attestation" papers. He married Edith Mary Wells (of whom I have no details) 1/10/1909 in St. Alban's Cathedral  Pretoria, S Africa. Whilst their marriage can be found under "British 1820 Settlers to South Africa", neither of them are listed as immigrants.

So far I have been unable to find out anything about either of them & very much want to know if they had any children & when & where they died?

PLEASE can any one help/advise me?  ??????

From Church Register Edith Mary was born circa 1876, London. Witness Arthur George Wells.

1881 census. Arthur G Wells (8) and Edith M Wells (5) living with parents Edward A and Mary A Wells,  1 Clarence Road, Hackney, London.

From Free BMD. Birth of Edith Mary Wells registered Hackney Dec quarter  1875. Mother's maiden name Legge.

Could be entirely coincidental but possibly a place to start.

Hi.
Thanks for both your replies. I didn't have the bapt, but did have the parents names. I know that church quite well.

Re Edith Mary,  ??? ??? ??? ??? I am not 100% convinced as there are several possibilities with that name? I really need to find one that goes to S.Africa? I can't find one in the list of immigrants, so maybe she was born there?????????????? If I could find a death for her in S.A then I might get her birth year & can work from there???????

Thanks very much for the trouble you have gone to. Doidy

According to the entry in the marriage register she was born in London.

If her brother was with her in S A is it possible the whole family migrated and records would be in their parents' names?

I am listening, ears open wide, eyes to.

Thanks Diana  ;)

Sorry,  I'm not clever enough to give you the direct link.

Google "TVL Pretoria St Alban the Martyr Anglican marriages  1871-1955 Family Search"

Open link. Should show image of church marriage register. Turn to page 192.

Hope that gets your there.

Hi

The link to the marriage Certificate

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-DWPC-X?i=191&wc=SFV8-N38%3A44975801%2C52325201%2C60123901%2C60173101&cc=1468076

Sorry it's so long....

Roberts Heights was the military base of the time. Is is possible he came here as a soldier and she came with him?  It would explain them both being at Roberts Heights given as their residence at the time of their marriage?

Thank you both for your replies. I got into the marriage entry & can now see why you feel it is the Edith Mary Wells from Hackney.

I have also "googled" Robert Heights, that in itself is interesting.

Have now established Austin died in 1962 in S.Africa. Any one out there who might be in a position to check newspapers for that time please?  ???

Have also got someone checking "Forces Records".

Slowly getting there. It is so wonderful being able to link with such helpful people through Rootchat. Thanks.
