William Hayes/Sarah Morris marriage.
« on: Monday 22 January 18 18:59 GMT (UK) »
We recently got our g.g.grandmothers birth certificate in order to find out her mother's maiden name.
Harriet Selina Hayes was born on 6th September 1853 in Hampton upon Arden, Warwickshire. Her father William and mother Sarah formally Morris.
We have been unable to find a marriage for Harriets parents and wonder if anyone could have a look in case we've missed something.
We are aware that on some trees they have a Sarah Smith down as Williams wife, the couple married 15 August 1841 in Warwick.
Harriet had four siblings born in Hampton and another two in Birmingham. We have census details for the family. Harriet married our g.g.grandfather John Phillips and we have had help on his line from Rootschat in the past.

Any help finding a marriage for William Hayes and Sarah Morris would be great. Thank you.

Hi

On the 1861 Census the oldest child is Bartholomew born 1844. (Assuming I have the right family!)

On the GRO Index there is no Mother's Maiden Name listed, yet the parents were married in 1841?

Chewing that one over!

Yes Bartholomew is the oldest child. Harriets down the list somewhat, and her mother is Sarah formally Morris. We are sure the Sarah Smith is wrong.

Ok. But why doesn't it give Morris as the MMN for Bartholomew on the GRO Index?

Perhaps they couldn't read it to translate?

Hi if I put in on GRO Index either male or female mmn Morris, why do I see possible births in Basford, when the children are in Aston full name mmn Morris?

Haven't a clue  ;D. But we thought we had cracked it when we found Harriets mothers name !  ;D
They finished up around the Deritend area of Birmingham and that's where Harriet met John Phillips. We know about them in Birmingham.

I can find baptisms in Hampton in Arden with parents William and Sarah for
William 1843 (poss. died 1843 death ref has name Hayse)
Bartholomew 1844
James 1846
Emily 1848
Elizabeth 1851
Harriet Selina 1853

Gro has
William 1843 no mmn
Bartholomew 1844 no mmn
Emily 1848 no mmn
Elizabeth 1851 mmn Morris
Harriet Selina mmn Morris
Kate 1856 mmn Morris
William Henry 1859 mmn Morris

The marriage of William Hayes and Sarah Smith 15 August 1841 reads as follows

William Hayes of full age, bachelor, Labourer of Satsford father William Hayes
Sarah Smith of full age, spinster of Saltsford father John Smith
Witnesses Ann Smith, James Hayes.

As the children born after 1851 have a mother's maiden name on their birth refs I was wondering if Sarah (Smith) had died and William had remarried but the William Hayes/Sarah Smith marriage is the only one coming up, no sign of a Hayes/Morris marriage, unless of course  Morris was Sarah's maiden name and she was a widow . The only snag is there doesn't seem to be a death for a Sarah Hayes in Warwickshire between the birth of Emily in 1848 and the birth of Elizabeth in 1851.

Thank you so much for that emeltom. We did wonder if Sarah Smith and Sarah Morris might somehow be the same person. Your post makes things seem clearer, and now we know the later children have mmn Morris
Thanks.

Just out of interest in the 1851 Census Sarah gives her birthplace as Corley, Warwickshire. Familysearch has no record of a Sarah Smith being born there but there is an entry for a Sarrah Maris baptised Corley parents William and Ann 15 November 1818.
