The Bennetts -1820's onwards, Fylde Area
« on: Tuesday 23 January 18 04:04 GMT (UK) »
I am having problems with some relatives and am hoping that somebody can help me.
2 Relatives, sisters - Jennet Atkinson, born 1827, Pilling and Mary Atkinson born 1825. They are daughters of Ellen and Thomas Atkinson.
I have birth, baptism, marriage and Jennets death information but my trouble lies with the Bennett brothers who they appear to have married.
Mary married Richard Bennett for whom I can get no definite birth info- probably about 1821. After the marriage of Mary and Richard I have got lost. Maybe they emigrated.
Jennet's husband James I think was born 1822 with some Baptism info 13/1/1822. I think the boy's parents were John and Jane.
Jennet's son George was born in 1851 and he married Mary J Bennett. On the 1891 Census onward she is stated as being born in Canada. I think she was born in England and emigrated to Canada.
Where the marriage took place I cannot find although her daughter Jennett Marie was born in Canada and 2 sons born in England
Also found records of George and his son James Richard travelling to New York on their way to Canada to visit his Father In Law in 1908 after his wife died in 1900 in England.

Any help would be very much appreciated. Maybe I have just got too confused.

Thanks -Val

When Jennet Atkinson a servant father Thomas, a labourer married James Bennett 28 November 1848 his father John both farmers, she was 21 and he was 26. Giving him a birth year circa 1822.

Witnesses John Readman and Elizabeth Atkinson

James Bennett age 48 died 1870, registration district Fylde.
Husband of Jennett, right age as he was 38 in 1861.
Still working on Mary and Richard

I think you may be right about Richard and Mary emigrating to Canada.
I found the following entry George Bennett born 1849 England, parents Richard and Mary Bennett married Louisa Annie Garnham daughter of Henry and Mary Garnham at Oxford Ontario Canada 13 April 1883.

There is a George Bennett born 1849 registered West Derby England mothers maiden name Atkinson.

1861 Census  Malahide Elgin Ontario
Richard Bennett 41 born England  Farmer
Mary 36                   ditto
George 13                ditto
Ellen 11                    ditto
John 4                       ditto  I think this should be 8 as 18 in 1871
Thomas 9                  Canada I think this should be 6 as 16 in 1871
Mary J 6                    Canada

1871 Census Norfolk North  Canada West
Richard Bennett  52  Farmer born England
Mary 44
George 22
Ellen 20
John 18
Thomas A 16
Mary Jane 14
James William 9

1881 Census Elgin East Ontario Canada
Richard Bennett 61
Mary 55
George 31
Thomas 26
Ellen 29
Mary J 23
James 19

Still looking for 1891 Census

1901 Census Bayham, Elgin East, Ontario
Richard Bennett 82 widow born 18 May 1819 England emigrated 1854
James born 7 December 1861  Canada (he married Lillian)
Ellen born 12 November 1850   emigrated 1854

Richard died 15 July 1908 Elgin Canada
ADDED found his death certificate states born Lancashire England

Looks like George Bennett son of James and Jennett married his cousin daughter of Richard and Mary Bennett.
It has to be before 2 June 1888 as Jennet Marie Bennett' birth was recorded as that date in Elgin Ontario daughter of George Bennett and Mary J Bennett.
From the English census you would never know George left the country.

Finally found Richard and Mary Bennett before they left England

1851 census West Derby Lancashire
Prescot Road
Richard Bennet (sp) 30 farm labourer born Ambleton Lancs.
Mary 25  launderess  born Pilling
George 2
Ellen 4 months.

Now you have a birth date of 18 May 1819 for Richard from 1901 census and a place Ambleton Lancs. from 1851 census.

Marriage: 24 Feb 1847 St John the Baptist, Pilling, Lancashire, England
Richard Bennett - 26, Farmer, Bachelor, Pilling
Mary Atkinson - 21, Servant, Spinster, Pilling
    Groom's Father: John Bennett, Farmer
    Bride's Father: Thomas Atkinson, Farmer
    Witness: James Bennett; Jennet Atkinson

Also I would guess that it is not Ambleton but Hambleton which is in the same area as Pilling

Thanks everybody for your information which I am just looking at. We live in Australia so all your efforts came in overnight.
I thought that George had married his cousin, have one immigration record but need to follow the trail.
Will put some more work in over these next few days.

Have a Good Day
