Daniel Bruyn and his wife Sarah Nicholls were married in England and were Catholic. Their daughter's obit in NSW Australia says that when they lived in France for about 4 years, that they were with her people a long established French family (they lived at Graville, Le Havre, Seine France when in France).

We say the spelling of the surname is supposed to be Bruin or Bruen but it was continued on here as Bruyn.

Daniel was born in Roscommon

Not all French families were Catholic- Huguenots, for example.

There are still "de Bruen" families in Roscommon
I grew up with some. 

It was associated with a Cromwellian family LINK

Also Mac Braoin being the Irish for BREEN with connections in Roscommon and the Midlands was anglicized to variations of Bruen.
