Suffolk farmhouse transported to America 1930s
« on: Tuesday 23 January 18 09:52 GMT (UK) »
In 1930, Brundish Hall, a Suffolk farmhouse located next to Brundish parish church, was acquired by an American millionaire whose hobby was collecting old properties, apparently. The building was dismantled piece by piece, each piece being numbered and the whole was transported to the U.S.A. where it was re-built. I do not know the location but there is a clue in that some church brasses from Brundish turned up in Philadelphia.

I appreciate that this is a long shot but.... Can anyone suggest who this millionaire might have been? Where he lived? The location of any properties that he "collected" and had rebuilt?

The British newspapers have so far been unable to shed any further light on this problem. Also would anyone know of the best contacts in Pennsylvania/Philadelphia to try with respect to Archives.

Thanks for that - that's a great lead that we can follow up.

did you find anything further?  My wife's 4 x Great Grandfather John Nance Gooch 1770-1849 is recorded as having lived there in the 1839 Stradbooks Directory

No further information was discovered, unfortunately. But I'm interested to learn that your wife is a descendant of John Nance Gooch. He was a member of the Loyal Worlingworth Volunteers, a corps of ninety men formed to defend their parishes in the event of Napoleon invading in 1798-1802. When the corps was disbanded in 1802, each man was presented with a silver medal by the commander of the corps, Captain John Henniker-Major, who was also Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Suffolk and a wealthy member of the local gentry. Our history group has that particular medal that was presented to John Nance Gooch.

You probably already have this:  it gives conflicting report of both being shipped to US and also of it being stored in Suffolk.

Very interesting.  Just wondering how we confirm the Halls shipping destination.

To confirm my wife is related to John Nance Gooch down the following branch (lots of branches and he has a ton of grandchildren of various removes).

John Nance Gooch and Elizabeth Button (1774-1842)
George Gooch (1801-1879) and Susan Garrett (1808-1858)
John Nance Gooch (1843-1930) and Mary Jane Sharman (1855-98)
Rosella Hannah Gooch (1885-1953) and Arthur Earnest Mann (1875-1944)
William Arthur Mann (1912-1991) and Olive Caroline Jarman (1911-96)

George:
With your query on the Gooch family, maybe it will bring forth others who can find a newspaper article on Brundish Hall being reassembled in the U.S.
