« on: Tuesday 23 January 18 12:55 GMT (UK) »
Joseph and Katherine BENNETT baptized their son, William, on 25th February, 1722, in Saltash. I have been unable to locate their marriage or any other children.

Can anyone help, please?

Joseph Benet married Catherine Lobb 8 April 1721 at St Stephens by Saltash
Son William was baptised there 1722 and daughter Mary 1724.

Looking for baptisms for Joseph and Catherine I can find two possibles for Joseph

Joseph Bennett 1698 St Stephens-in-Brannel mother mary
Joseph Bennett 1700 Twyardreath father John

and one for Catherine

Catherine Lobb 1703 St Breack father Thomas

I don't know Cornwall very well so couldn't say how those parishes fit with Saltash. For all I know they could be the other side of the county.

Hi Emeltom,

Many thanks for all that info.

I'll come back to your first point later.

Concerning your second point, St Stephen in Brannel is some 30 miles from Saltash; Tywardreath is 21 miles. I shall have to do some further research to see if I can eliminate either of them.

Regards

Hi Emeltom,

Returning to your first posting, I was obviously too specific in my search parameters (a lesson I keep forgetting!). I've now located the entry on FindMyPast. It's certainly the one I wanted. Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction and also for finding the baptism of their daughter, Mary.

It's always worth remembering that Parish Clerks, and the clergy as well, often wrote down either what they heard or how they thought it should be spelled. Worthwhile checking for name variants or Soundex if nothing comes up to match what you have written.

Glad to have been of help.

Hi Emeltom,

Thanks to your discovery of Catherine LOBB, I've managed to trace the LOBB family's movements from St Ervan via St Breock to St Germans which is only 4 miles from Saltash where Catherine eventually married. Catherine had at least 6 siblings, and two of the baptismal records contain a mother's name. In 1694 this is Anstice and in 1700 it is Ann. My guess is that the former is correct whilst the latter is a result of laziness. Any thoughts?

More than likely Anstice and Ann are one and the same, unless you can find a death for  Anstice which is before the 1700 baptism to disprove this.
