Capt James Forrest - Glasgow Herald Obituary June 1944?

Hi 
I am trying to find out more about Capt James Forrest (4th/15th Punjab Regiment but late Royal Scots) who died of wounds at Kohima, India on 29th May 1944.  I can find a death notice in the Scotsman on 12th June but wondered if there was likely to be a fuller obituary in the Glasgow Herald.  He came from Dalkeith, Midlothian.

No option to word search so you have the check through the relevant issues around the date you are looking for.

Have you also looked at cwgc website, he is mentioned there.

Yes, I have looked at CWGC site and have also got the War Diary which describes the action he was killed in which I am researching.  But he had only joined the  Battalion at Kohima a couple of days before.  I have found him being commissioned in 1940 in the London Gazette into the Royal Scots but I am trying to fill in the gap if possible.

Why would there be an obituary in the Glasgow Herald? Did he have connections to Glasgow? If not, then the most likely source would be a local paper in Dalkeith area, if one existed.

If I were you I would contact Midlothian Council and ask them for the titles of local newspapers published in the county in the 1940s, and whether or not there is one local to Dalkeith that might have carried a longer obituary. They might even have a copy available where they could look it up for you.

Presumably he is the "Captain Forest" mentioned in various books on Kohima.

Yes, that is him.  I had missed that but perhaps I can be forgiven as all the characters he mentions are misspelt!!  Apart from Forest having two Rs,  Stanley Behrends was the other Captain killed.  Amongst the wounded are 'Jeffrey' who was Capt S Jafri according to the War Diary.  Anyway it adds a few extra details which are useful so thanks.
I would still like to find out more about Forrest and the others' earlier service and also find where Marment's account of the battles are recorded in full.
