1891 and 1901 do not show any employment for Rose.

Thank you very much. If I understand correctly he was at that time a blacksmith, who was born at Puddletown. I had always understood he worked on the railways and perhaps this role enabled him to work for the railway. I don't suppose you have access to the 1911 Census do you as that might show something?
