HARTLEY, William S. (1851-1928); Lost in "Hartley Country," Lancashire
« on: Wednesday 24 January 18 21:26 GMT (UK) »
Missing: William Shepard Hartley. Born on or about 5 May, 1851, somewhere in Lancashire. Parents were Thomas and Hannah. Emigrated to Canada before 1877, when he was married in Ontario. I would appreciate any assistance locating him and his family!

There's no birth in the index for that particular name.
What documentation give his parents names?

Welcome to RootsChat!

It looks to me as though a brother (George Shep*d HARTLEY) as well as the father Thomas also ended up in Ontario.

Here's George marrying:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FMF5-XZK

Did he marry a sister of William's wife?

If you look at the 1871 Canadian census you can spot Thomas and George living close together in Hastings.(Ontario)

Probably Thomas' first marriage:

Sorry,I'm making a bit of a mess of this but maybe someone else can carry on!
Dinner's about to burn.

Hi all, maybe a coincedence but a John Hartley 51 and Elizabeth Hartley 54 have in their household a group of SHEPHERD members, also a Visitor/Married b Yorkshire Thomas Hartley aged 40 in 1861 census RG09/3039/101/22 for Spotland Rochdale.

EDIT seeing the reply above, does not look therefore like the correct Thomas!

Back again.

Maybe in 1851:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:SG5S-H43

Birth from GRO:
HARTLEY, WILLIAM       mmn SHEPHERD
1848  S Quarter in BOLTON UNION  Volume 21  Page 83

Doesn't match the 5 May, 1851 dob though!

Thomas Townson Hartley married Hannah Shephard 27/3/1826 Manchester Cathedral, Lancashire.   Both single - he signed - his occupation Hatter (which ties in with 1851 census when family are in Great Bolton, Lancashire).

Thomas Townson Heartley b.4/8/1804, bp.26/8/1804 Hornby, Lancashire, son of Christopher Smith Heartley and Mary (1851 census states born Wray, Lancashire but first church in this tiny village was not built until 1840.   Hornby is 1 mile ESE of Wray.

Hannah Shepherd shown bc.1807 Caston, Derbyshire per 1851 census - thought this should probably be Castleton (enumerator having difficult with her dialect perhaps) and a Hannah Shepherd bp.10/1/1807 Castleton, Derbyshire, dau. of George and Nancy.

In 1841 the family are in Manchester.

So, this family did indeed end up in Canada - where Thomas died as Thos. T. Hartley 20/4/1878 Hastings, Ontario.   The only 'blip' is that their son William was born in 1848, birth reg'd Jul-Sept.qtr Bolton.   If his birthdate was 5 May (as stated on census in Canada) his birth should appear in the June quarter unless registered late for some reason.

Thomas Townson Hartley and Hannah Shepherd had at least the following children:
*George b.10/5/1828, bp.21/12/1828 St.George, Hulme (Manchester)
Thomas Townson bp.23/1/1831 Manchester Cathedral
John bp.9/6/1833 Manchester Cathedral
Elizabeth bp.10/1/1836 Cockermouth, Cumberland - bur.3/2/1836 Cockermouth
Elizabeth Ann bp.1/1/1837 Cockermouth - bur.29/10/1837 Cockermouth
Christopher Smith bp.25/11/1838 Cockermouth
Joseph bp.13/12/1840 Cockermouth
Robert bp.28/5/1843 Cockermouth - bur.6/8/1843 Cockermouth
Ralph bp.16/7/1844 Cockermouth    )
Hannah bp.16/7/1844 Cockermouth ) twins - can't see Hannah in 1851 so perhaps she died.
William b.1848 Bolton
James b.1851 Bolton
(Doesn't look like the last 2 were baptised).

*Baptism entry confirms Hannah's maiden name of Shepherd, Thomas is a 'Hatter' and they were then living at York Street, Hulme.

Thank you! I only discovered the marriage to William's brother after posting my question. I am very grateful for the amazing help that everyone provided! Truly above and beyond anything I had hoped for!
