John Marlow - Royal Marines - 1831 - Portsmouth
« on: Thursday 25 January 18 15:16 GMT (UK) »
Searching for service record of the following person. I believe this record is for John Stephen Marlow born 18 October 1793 - St. Mary, Nottinghamshire, England. There is another thread where I am searching for his marriage to Honora. They had children in Portsmouth, Hampshire and are on the census. Baptism occupation for father does match to the following.

First name(s)    John
Last name    Marlow
Rank    Colour Sgt.
Ship or unit    RM, Portsmouth Div.
Sub unit    85th Company
Location    Portsmouth

Archive reference (ADM)    96/443
Record set    British Royal Navy Personnel 1831

Would the National Archives have the service record on this record set or is this an index only?

Any advice before I pay the fee at National Archives?

ADM 96/443 is described on the NA catalogue as a "list" and "Register" from pay records. As such this type of record contains no records of service (caveat - I haven't seen this exact one!).

RM Service records from that era, where they survive are for the most part in ADM 157 (there are others) but a Marlow with his detail doesn't seem to come up by name searching broadly on Marlow and reference ADM.  ADM 157 is prefaced with the remark not all [records] have survived.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,

Thank you for clarifying.

Thank you for looking as well. I did a search too. If not all records have survived, I'm not sure if it exists?
