Burns' Supper coming up!! Enjoy your Haggis!
« on: Friday 26 January 18 01:49 GMT (UK) »
AN OLD SCOTTISH TOAST!
Here's tae us
Wha's like us?
Damn few - and they're a' deid!!

*******
And here's  a wee poem from "More  Haggis Tales"  by R.A. McKenzie

THE HAGGIS AND BURNS' NIGHT!!

On twenty sixth of January
In each and every year,
Every Haggis in the land
Will wipe away a tear!

For on that day, the Haggis say
They must never forget
Those who died the day before
On every Burns' night yet!

When Scottish human beings point
To dead on Flodden Field
The Haggis have an argument
On which they never yield!

Bemoan the dead of Flodden Field
They say that is your right
But how would humans like it
If they were a dish that night?

To feed the craggy kilted folk
Who gather round a table
To celebrate the verse and prose
Of Burns of fame and fable!

Burns was just an Ayrshire man
Who farmed like many others
He tilled the land, he loved the girls
And sometimes, too, their mothers!

Celebrate Burns if you must
The Haggis kindly say
But can't you find another dish
To eat upon that day?

The Haggis are a kindly bunch
With no wish to fight and feud
But they will go to any lengths
To protect their dwindling brood!

They have already taken steps
Towards that very end
And just before each Hogmanay
It's northward that they wend!

They go as far as possible
And settle in the heather
In Sutherland and Caithness
Regardless of the weather!

There among the peat bogs
They rest their weary legs
And spend the time repairing
Or making filibegs!  *

So if one wants to celebrate
On Burns' night any year
One finds the price of Haggis
Has risen and is dear!

But please don't blame the butcher
He cannot help himself
It's scarcity that causes it
There's not much on the shelf!

After Burns' night's over
The Haggis all disperse
Over all the Highlands
Free from their annual curse!

****************************
( * Fiibegs- Kilts)!

Had our Burns Supper last night and all the 'Clan' were there.  Veggie Broth, Meat and Veggie Haggis, Neeps & Tatties followed by cheese and oatcakes.  Plenty of Whisky too! Also, lots of clearing up to do with a sore head  ::).  Finally got to bed at 2am.  Little fragile today.

Rosie, enjoyed your wee 'funny'.  Will be using that one! Edit: sorry, should have thanked jaybelnz

Auntie Fay sang (lots), and she had brought along an old 'Oor Wullie' annual with loads of Burns related stories/poems/funnies.  Looking forward to next year.

Rosie

Sadly I did not celebrate Rosie, nor have I done for several years. Haggis is difficult to come by in my part of Australia and there is something not quite right about eating it in 31 degree heat. Much nicer in a cold climate.  :)
