Papers Past - Help Finding two Articles
« on: Friday 26 January 18 03:40 GMT (UK) »
Hello All,

I found, by accident, some information that I knew would be important for the family I am researching at the moment. But, uncharacteristically for me, I obeyed the rule which says, Do Not Get Distracted and the other one which says Stay On Track.

Now, I can not find these two articles. One was just a snippet, the other a small paragraph.
These are the words I remember:
Rona and/or Rhona; army; Henry English; South Africa (perhaps); England (meaning the country); engagement and/or marriage.

A Henry Wilson English did marry a Rona (I have not found the marriage in either NZ or England), and they came back to NZ on the Mataroa in 1929. Henry died in 1935 and Rona married Philip Westenra in Akaroa in 1939.

If any one can help I will be most grateful.

Hello Jean,

How frustrating! Been there, done that........ ::)

Just to clarify, this is not the couple we are looking for? Or is it?

"A Henry Wilson English did marry a Rona (I have not found the marriage in either NZ or England), and they came back to NZ on the Mataroa in 1929. Henry died in 1935 and Rona married Philip Westenra in Akaroa in 1939."

Do you have a rough idea as to when the articles were printed?

Thank you minniehaha,

I think they are the same couple.
The Rona and child (not named as only recently deceased, but born 1928) are the family that ended up in Akaroa with Philip Westenra.

I suppose the whole point of this exercise is to find Rona's maiden surname - which I can not remember from the articles. I could buy her death certificate but prefer not to spend money unless there is no other way of finding the information. And I can not look up her birth - I am sure she is New Zealand born - as I do not know her surname. Catch 22.

STOP PRESS
I have just found the surname - Ramsbottom-Isherwood. How on earth did I forget that?

I will mark this as solved and retire.
Thank you again minniehaha - some how you made ny brain cells work.

;)    Was about to mention that the small daughter who travelled with them to NZ in 1929, has her birth registered SEP 1928 (at Lambeth) with the mother's maiden name shown as "Ramsbottom-Isherwood".
Glad you've got it sorted, Jean.

Thank you Lucy,

I might take up knitting again. The only trouble with that is if you lose a stitch you have to find it yourself.  ;D
