Herity/Heraghty in Belmullet,Mayo
« on: Friday 26 January 18 06:38 GMT (UK) »
Hello! Been searching for these guys for about a year now with no luck..

Samuel John Heraghty (Herity)
b: June 23 1823
Belmullett, Mayo, Ireland
d: Jan 3 1908

Married Christy Ann Wood in Ontario, Canada.

He immigrated to Canada in 1871- I have the immigration records for this. It's the only record I have to tie him coming to Canada. It is now spelt "Herity" but I have been told that it was once "Heraghty", absolutely no records for any Samuel in Ireland in that area/right name.

I found possibly his father... a John Heraghty death record in Belmullet born abt 1790 and died 1870.

I found a few Heraghty death records in the right area with similar birthdates to Samuel, so I want to assume these may be his siblings.... I found a Kate Heraghty b:1815, Bridget Heraghty b:1821, John Heraghty b:1821, Sabina Heraghty b:1822, Martin Heraghty b:1822. All of these birth years are just approx. I found Bridget on a census in 1901 in Belmullet, and Martin & Sabina have Griffins Valuation records.

I know in Ireland they followed a naming pattern of naming the first born after the grandfather and second after the father.. so if it helps his children were Anthony, Margaret, Sarah, John, Margarey, Frederick, James. I want to assume his father was named John and grandfather was Anthony...

That is where my research has led me! Made no progress with the Heraghtys. Any help is appreciated :)

Church Registers start too late....  https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0742
Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to research, and you feed him for a lifetime.

I know, so unfortunate! Thank you for looking. I am not sure how I will find them unless some distance relatives stumble across this post and fill in the pieces to the puzzle

:). Hello not sure if this helps any but in my husband's tree his gt.gt.grandmother was a Honor (Anne) Heraghty she was born circa 1838 and died 18 May 1888 aged 50.  She was from Belclare, Streamstown and was the daughter of John Heraghty.  She married Austin O'Donnell on 17th April 1873 This might not be of any use but thought you never know!

I was researching a distant cousin from Belmullet this morning when I found the
posts re Heraghty. My 2nd cousin Martin Togher was married to a Bridget Thornhill whose grandparents
were Hugh Gaughan and Honor Heraghty from Lurgacloy nr Belmullet. On the marriage cert. of 1872
Honor's father was John Heraghty. Honor was born c.1855 . I found the death cert for John who died 1881 aged 60 Honor was the informant.I don't know if this helps in any way . If I come across anything more I'll post it.

Tradition was to name 2nd son after maternal grandfather.
