Restore photo Grandfather Afred,Father William and brother Alan all Whittingham

Please try and restore this photo taken around 1944/1945 of three generations of my family also could anyone tell me which regiment my Dad's army uniform represents, I think he was a Warrant Officer.

Short answer to your question: nobody knows.
We’re all just independent volunteers from all over the world who happen to love (or are addicted) to restoring photos. (We're also addicted to our payment of lavish praise from photo owners. )

Seriously, though, usually within a couple of days you’ll find most photos sent in have had at least two or three people having a go at them. If you look through the archives you’ll probably find that the most popular ones that people have worked on (some with up to a dozen restores) are those with high resolution images (look at the kB number under each photo) because they’re less hard on our ageing eyes.

Sorry, I can't help regarding the uniform, but others may be able to. If you don't get any answers within a couple of days about this you might attract people in the know if you amend your title by starting it with something like, "UNIFORM for IDENTIFICATION please, and Restore etc...")

Peter has said it here and I agree.      I can't attack this one - too small for me.

Well done to Peter and Pat for having a go at this tiny photo.   

Though . . . . . I wonder if it would be a good idea to ask the OP if there is any chance of a better scan BEFORE trying to improve what's been posted . . . .  what do we think?  Or is it a lost cause?

(And, sorry to hijack your post, June, but it’s probably good for posters to know of restorers’ concerns - so we can do a better job for people.)

It’s hard to know what tack to take, Wiggy.

We want to do the best for people, but I’ve noticed that sometimes in asking for a better basis to start from we end up scaring people away.

If it’s a good enough scan I’ll usually end up having a go.  But “good enough” is hard to quantify. I’d class this one of June’s (EssexDiva) as borderline, while the one on the thread below (from Patmar) with a similar resolution, I think, isn’t really “good enough” - not for me, anyway. There’s so much damage that I think you really need a better basis to start from to have any chance of re-creating what’s missing.

So, at the moment I’m sort-of taking the approach of working on “good enough” ones, (especially when they come from people new to the board, who can be scared off), but also mentioning that they could get a better result from a better image - to try to future-proof their further requests.

I wonder what other restorers think.

Thank you Pat & Peter for attempting to reconstruct this old picture for me, Kudos to you both for attempting something I didn't know could be done, you both did a superb job.  I have framed both pictures and have them hung in my hallway, which I call my "Hall of Fame".

Peter, when this copy of my picture was sent to me via email it was sized an 8 x 10, I had sent this photo to RootsChat the way I had received it, of course it was not accepted, I in return downsized it again not acceptable, kept on trying until it became acceptable "voila".
