James Newton and Mary Meakin Married
« on: Friday 26 January 18 21:32 GMT (UK) »
James Newton was Baptism 1815 Wybunbury and his Burial was 1872 Wybunbury
his Wife Emma Meakin born of the township of Bridgemere and parish of Wybunbury and district of Nantwich. But the marriage keeps coming up 1854 Ashton Under Lyne Lancashire? But I can not find a Licence and normal the wife marries in her own parish. Her Baptism I can not find as well 1829ish
if anyone can help I'll be grateful

Presume you mean freebmd which shows an Emma Meakin and James Newton on the same page?

That is not always the case

In 1851 she is incorrectly shown as Menkin and birthyear is 1834 so a very wide variation

Suggest you buy a copy of the 1854 marriage cert which will give her fathers name and occupation

The 1841 has a 13yr old Emma Meakin in Stockport with parents George and Elizabeth but until her fathers name is confirmed from the marriage cert there is no way of knowing if she is the same Emma

From a pm - Mary Meakin is shown as mother in law in 1871

I cannot understand why you are searching for a marriage licence - it will tell you nothing of any use

As you already know - there is a very wide variation in ages for both James and Emma in the census entries

1861 - James is 45 b Wynbury but in 1871 he is 51 b Hough
1861 Emma is 46 b Bridgemere but in 1871 she is 42 b Bridgemere

In 1871 Mary Meakin is 79 b Bridgemere but in 1861 she is 52 b Bridgemere

The family are in Staffs - not Cheshire -  in 1841  All shown as b Staffs except Mary & Henry

Thomas Meakin    35 farmer
Mary  30
Henry  9
Emma  7
Pamela  5
Jane 3
William 1 Month

No need - it's on the FamilySearch site as a film that can be browsed via the Catalogue https://www.familysearch.org/catalog/search

Search for place Ashton-under-Lyne; expand the Church Records; some way down that list you'll see Parish registers for Christ Church, Ashton-under-Lyne, 1846-1929; click on that, scroll down and you'll see 4 films described. Film 8091324 is the one that you want, and it's image 143 of 1139

No. 267 1st March 1854
James Newton, full age, labourer of Ashton, son James Newton, labourer
& Emma Meakin, full age, of Turner Lane, dau Thomas Meakin, labourer
Marriage by Licence
Witnesses Ann Meakin & William Pemberton (probably a "professional witness" as name appears in next entry as well).

I am not sure how many people realise this is there. I suspect it is not indexed.
