Wheesbrook Holmfirth?
« on: Friday 26 January 18 21:50 GMT (UK) »
A new one for me. And I thought I knew my Holme Valley locations quite well...
Anyone know where Wheesbrook or Wheelbrook might be/ have been?
The place name appears in 1800 on  baptism record at Lane Chapel, Holmfirth.
Baptism of my gggrtgrandmother Ruth Collier, daughter of Joseph and Hannah.
Ruth eventually married into the Wimpenny clan of Burnlee and lived to the astoundingly old age of 96!!

Just can't find any other references to the name or similar.
The place was in the Almondbury parish area, therefore on the Upperthong side of the river Holme.
Would be useful if the Collier parents were in the 1841 census, but there is no trace.

Wheels Brook is marked on the present 1:25000 Dark Peak map. It would appear to have been a farm with some associated.

Take A635 west out of Holmfirth and it's on the right just after you cross Green Gate late going south and Thick Hollins Road going north. It's about Ikm from the Peak National Park boundary.

I've got the map on my lap as I'm typing this, hope it helps.

Thanks, Gibel.
Just what I was looking for. Keep coming across the names of small hamlets, farms, groups of dwellings.
Browsing  the beautifully written records for Lane Chapel in the 1790's, there seem to have been a small number of families living at Wheelsbrook at that time: Colliers, Shaws, Brooks.
The Collier name seem to have disappeared from the area by the early 1800's, apart from my Ann who became a Wimpenny. What would be really interesting would be to find any other descendents of Joseph and Hannah Collier, in order to see if "blindness" was recorded for any of them on censuses. ( Ruth, her daughter Ann, my grandmother and mother all lived to very old age but had sight problems, easily treated in modern times, of course)

Thanks, keyboard.
This Hannah Collier is indeed Ruth's widowed mother, living next door, having moved down to Burnlee from Wheelbrook up on the tops.

Hello. I'm a distant relative of Ruth Wimpenny mentioned in this group and was hoping someone may know the exact location of the Family Vault at Lane Chapel Burial Ground mentioned in her Obituary. Thank you.

GarryBB, have just seen your post in ref an old post of mine.
I don't know anything about the family grave at Lane Chapel but I do have the impression from other posts on rootschat that there are some problems about access to the cemetery there.
You mention an obituary for Ruth Wimpenny. Could I ask where you found the obituary? I 'd be interested to see it if possible. Thanks in advance.
