Occupations on 1939 Register.

Hi all,

I can read most of the two occupations on the 1939 Register in question but not the very last word of each.

My gr aunt Vera Phillips (1911-1990) is shown as a 'Bookeeper Sausage ?'

My gt uncle George Ernest Phillips (1916-1979) is shown as 'Stock Record Clerk. ?'

They were living in Mitcham in Surrey at the time.

What does the last word in each say?

I think the second is:  Roneo

That would relate to a company making or distributing Ro(tary)neo(style) machines.

For the first (and no more than a tentative suggestion). perhaps:  cowings (with a sloppily-formed o)

I agree with "Roneo". They were a type of simple printing machine for use in offices.

I wonder if the other word is "casings" ? A sausage casing maker would need a bookkeeper

That looks good to me, Maec.

The downstroke of the a is separated a bit from the loop.

What then becomes the s is shaped identically to that in Sausage (although the pen may have gone around in the other direction).

I also saw 'Roneo' and 'casings' before reading the other replies.  There were (are?) firms making just the casings (aka skins) into which butchers would force sausage meat.  Yummy

I would never have got casings & as for Roneo I was seeing Romeo!


Having just googled Roneo machines I now know what they were. Basically early photocopiers for reproducing/copying documents etc. Does this mean that George Ernest used the Roneo machines or that he worked for a company that sold them?

I never met my great uncle but did meet & get to know my gt aunt. I don't recall her mentioning anything about any occupations that she had though!
