Home Office Prison Records
« on: Saturday 27 January 18 10:10 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to track an entry in FindMyPast which is a record for Henry MOIR in 1822 when he was aged 15.  I am a subscriber.  When I search under his name I only get the entries for when he was in trouble in 1823 and 1824.  Hoping for guidance please to navigate to the 1822 record.

Why do you think there is an 1822 record? I am not seeing anything.

Record ID fprTNA/CCC/PCOM2/0196524

The reference you have cited above is attached to the 1823 record mentioned by ShaunJ. That particular Newgate Prison register PCOM 2/196 covers 16 months of admissions, from 1 July 1822 to 31 October 1823.

I found it on this link:  https://www.digitalpanopticon.org/search?e0.type.t.t=root&e0._all.s.s=Henry%20Moir  and I am now assuming the 1822 was an indexing error - either that or they have used the start of the range to reference the entry.  I have the information about the 1823 (not guilty) trial and the 1824 (guilty) trial.  My hope was that if there had been an earlier event there might be a little more information about this elusive ancestor's parentage.

Thank you for your efforts everyone.  J

It's good to have clarification on that.  Again, thank you.  J

My hope was that if there had been an earlier event there might be a little more information about this elusive ancestor's parentage.

You're unlikely to find parent information in a prison record. The best chance will be if there was a petition, submitted by a family member, or by local people who would vouch for the prisoner.

DigitalPanopticon has a link to the Register of Petitions, showing that a petition was submitted on behalf of Henry Moir in 1825. This is held at the National Archives in piece HO 17/102, bundle Tk, item 28.

The petition is digitised on FindMyPast here - https://search.findmypast.co.uk/record/browse?id=tna%2fccc%2fho17%2f102%2f01106

If the above link doesn't work, here's the access path ...
England & Wales, Crime, Prisons & Punishment Browse, 1770-1935
In the Series box, enter Ho17
In the Piece box, enter 102
Don't enter a year, as this blocks the results.

The petition is on image 1106 of 1123.

Thank you.  I will follow this up.  After sentencing in December, 1824, in 1825 Henry Moir would have been aboard one of two hulks (Justicia and later Bellerophon) before being moved to the Albion in September, 1826 for transportation to New South Wales.   I will let you know what I find!  J
