An update on my search for William Wayman (Weyman).
William Weyman is recorded on HMS Cornwallis in 1810. His naval will at the time mentions his wife, Ann, residing in Greenock so likely to be the correct couple. The Cornwallis changed its name to Akbar in 1811 and returned to Woolwich in 1812/13, so John Wayman's birth in Jan 1814 in Greenwich seems plausible.
William and Ann are recorded in Greenock in the 1841 census, William aged 76, occupation Merchant Seaman, and Ann 69.
This raises the question as to why he joined the Navy when he was around 45, was he 'pressed' or did he volunteer. Was the merchant trade so badly affected by the Napolionic wars?
When they married in 1797 he is referred to as a Merchant Seaman so presumably was operating out of Greenock.
Does anyone have experience in tracking down Merchant seaman on muster records, the National Archives collection is sparse around this date?
I have so far failed to locate a plausible birth for William around 1765, the census only gives the location as England.
