William Warnes Royal Marine
« on: Saturday 27 January 18 14:17 GMT (UK) »
Hello
William Warnes was born 6 April 1875 in Great Witchinham Norfolk sometimes shown as St Faiths.
He was the son of Henry Warnes and Sarah Warnes formerly Tubby. One of 9 children. He is on census returns in Norfolk till 1891 --Great Witchinham with parents and siblings. Dont know when he moved to Devon .
He married Clara Ellen Pepperell on 3/10/1914 at East Stonehurst . He  is listed as a Widower age 38 and she is single age 28. He is listed as a Private in the Royal Marines. I would like to find out about his first marriage and more about his Royal Marine service. He dies age 75 4/12/1950 Kingsbridge Devon . Their first child was born 1915 Dorothy E Warnes.. Sorry dont know if there were children from his first marriage.

His Death record lists him as pensioner Royal Marines  and latter as Caretaker.

His brother James b 1873 was also in the Royal Marines and marries 12/1/1896 Amy Ellen Colurite ( think a mis spelling)/Colwill.

Grateful for any  information on William Warnes.
Many Thanks.

Thanks will take a look but the date of birth is wrong. My William was born 6/April /1875.
Finding that Warnes was a very popular name.

He possibly lied about his age in order to meet enlistment criteria. Note that he would have been exactly 17 according to the date he gave ( joining on his birthday).

Thank you .
Yes you are right he did lie about his age. Originally enlisted 2/11/1891. No is 5793
gave his DOB as 2/11/74
Appears to have stayed in till after the end of WW1.
Record shows he was married for the first time in 18 Dec 1897 but unfortunately does not give the name of his wife. Great Progress, much appreciated.

There's a death for Alice M Warnes in Plymouth in 1910.

And in the 1901 census (East Stonehouse) there is Alice M Warnes, 25, "wife of John Warne, private RM"

Yes his first wife is Alice and she dies July 1910 .Dont know if they had any  children. William on the 1911 return is in Barracks and listed as a Widower.

On the UK Army and Navy BMD records on Ancestry 1730-1960 its unclear if they had 3 children or if thats for the entry above Williams Marriage ?
cant make out names but dates are 10/12/98, 31/8/05 and 24/1/08.
