Help with occupation 1891 census
« on: Saturday 27 January 18 16:38 GMT (UK) »
James Lindsay b. circa 1831/2 appears on 1891 census living in East Langdon, Kent. and given occupation is "Ruler of Easthampton" any ideas what this means?

On 1861 he is Curate in Stenton, Leicestershire, 1871 and 1881 Curate/clergyman in Cheltenham. Could it be something to do with the church?

I meant to add I do not have the copy of the original census just the printed transcript. So may be a mistranscription.

Hi

I think it says Rector of East Langdon, and is followed by Clergy.

Cheers

Looking further down the page there is an occupation Railway Signalman. The 'R' looks very much like the beginning of the James' occupation therefore I agree with Giggysycat that the occupation is Rector of East Langdon Clergy.

Thanks all. Transcriptions are priceless ;D made me smile.  Without the original to refer to it  can cause many problems.
