Can someone help with piecing together this family...
I am tracing back from Alice Tom, wife of Thomas Mathews (married 1802, St Columb Major)
1851 census at SCM:
Alice Mathews (widow) 71 b~1780 St Dennis, Cornwall
Rebecca Tom (sister) 64 b~1787 Motcombe, Cornwall
1841 census at SCM:
Allis Mathews (widow) 60 b~1781 Cornwall
Mary Tom 60 b~ 1781 Cornwall
Rebecca Tom 50 b~1791 Cornwall
1) Alice... can only find one baptism for this time and location - 27 Dec 1778 at St Dennis, daughter of John Tom & Mary. This seems ok, just a little earlier that would match.
2) Rebecca... found burial - 28 Feb 1857 SCM age 72 - so birth 1785. This is also a few years earlier than in the census records. The issue here is that Google informs me that "Motcombe" is not in Cornwall but in Dorset, and is 140 miles from SCM, so seems unlikely it is actually here she was born. If it was, the only baptism record I can find is 1787 which wouldn't be too bad for the year, but the parents are John Tombs and Jane. Perhaps there is a small place near to SMC that could have been mis-spelled, but looking on the map doesn't provide any hints.
3) Mary... death found 1843 SCM, seems likely to be the other sister as she's not on the 1851 census with the other two as in 1841. Born ~1781 but no idea where.
4) Don't know when Thomas Mathews (husband of Alice) died, sometime 1802-1841.
5) Can anything more be found about the parents?
I expect there are some whimsical spellings that may be the reason for this being particularly tricky to find records (and probably also that there aren't many at this time). I am already aware of Tomm and Allis.
Any advice and help appreciated...
