It looks like Alexander senior came back to England.
1901 Stockbridge Hampshire
Alexander Ferguson, 61, boarder, married, retired Capt. ord. dept, born Ireland
Bernard Ferguson, 9, son, born Cape Coloney.

Family search has the following baptisms, all on 18 March 1894, St Phillip, Cape Town:
Leonard, born 1886
Bernard born 1890
Margaret born 1888
All have only the fathers name of Ferguson listed, Army Sgt, abode- St Michaels Home, sponsors S. Evelyn Mary & S. Mary Blanch.
