Hi everyone a quick update. I have received Samuel’s death cert today. It was signed by the coroner and is linked to the inquest that is recorded in the newspaper. The only address given is St Mary’s parish so I am no further along in finding him in the 1861 census to confirm where he is born.
This still leaves some questions is this the right Samuel Austin/en? As the daughter giving evidence is not the same as one found in previous census records.
If it is not my Samuel Austin then where is he?
Don’t you just love brick walls ;D

As the daughter giving evidence is not the same as one found in previous census records.

The name of the daughter in the article is given as Mary Ann, and you know that his daughter was Margaret Ann.

I have found a lot of inaccuracies regarding names in newspaper reports, so personally I wouldn't put too much weight on that. It's possible, for instance that her name was reported as Marg. Ann and wrongly written in the article as Mary Ann. You do know that Margaret Ann married married a man called Wells (reply #10) which is the surname reported in the newspaper.

You know that your man was a mariner in 1841, and the newspaper article states that William had been a mariner.

I think the balance of probability is that it's the same person.

Hi panda,

Yes I posted the marriage at reply #10 :)

I can find William Wells with wife Mary Ann Ray Wells but not William and Margaret Ann Austen.

The newspaper article has Mary Ann Wells and I think we thought that Mary Ann was also Margaret Ann re the inquest.

What I was meaning was that I can’t find the Margaret A Wells (Austen) in censuses.

I only have her in 1871/81/91 she is living in Wales in Penarth. I cannot find any of her siblings or the parents in the 1851 or 1861 census

Hi Jen,

I read your reply #19 and then tried to find Margaret to see if Samuel and Ann might be with her. I couldn’t find her but found Mary Ann Ray and William Wells.
That is why I posted and we got the repeat of the information - my fault.

When I couldn’t find Margaret I wondered if Mary Ann (Ray) Wells was the one who gave evidence at the inquest but of course she couldn’t be . I was just trying to double check.
