John King b 1815 in Ostend, Flanders
« on: Sunday 28 January 18 15:19 GMT (UK) »
One of my ancestors, John King, is shown as being from Ireland in the 1841 and 1851 censuses, then suddenly, in 1861 he is a British Subject, born in Ostend. I can't believe that he would invent this as there's no reason to. He was a tailor and I don't know who is parents were.
If he really was born in Belgium it could be easier to find the rest of the family, I believed, but of course I'm having tremendous trouble and no luck so far.
Can anyone help me, please .
Incidentally I have all details of his children etc and it is just this birth that I need to solve as it may also lead me to his siblings and parents.
TIA

There is no record of a King birth in the online index for births in Oostende between the years 1813 and 1823.

Thank you so much for checking for me. I think I'd best take it that he was born in Ireland. He must have been drunk when he answered the questions. My only hope now is that he said he was from Oughterard or somewhere in Ireland that sounds like Ostend!
Thanks again

I haven't found the marriage. He married Bridget Drum/Doran, I believe. I've tried Rootsireland, Ancestry, FindMyPast, and can't find their marriage. Their first child was Ann, born in Sheffield in 1834 approx and then they went to Manchester. Births on GRO give Mother as Drum. They seem to have travelled quite a bit between Sheffield and Manchester, not sure why as he was a tailor.

I'm losing sleep over this!! DNA results haven't helped either :-(
Thanks for your interest

I wouldn't quite give up the Oostende theory altogeter Kathy as there were King's living in Oostende, albeit that they appear to pop up about 30 years after your John King. But where there is smoke there is fire (either that or a very heavy smoker! SMILES) so I will look into it further for you if you like.

Lucked out unfortunately. No birth records between 1802-1813 and no King's in the 1814 census. Back to square one.  ???

There were King’s in Ostende around the time of John King’s birth and they had a link to the UK.

Richard/Richardus King d before Nov 1816 England, occupation: mariner
X 17-12-1787 Sint-Gillis (Bruges/Brugge)
Anne Jeanne Taijlor b abt 1774 Bruges/Brugge (?? very young for 1787 marriage!), d 18-11-1816 Ostende, daughter of Jean Taijlor and Marie Deweerdt
-
Note: Anne’s parents were already dead in 1816, but did she come from a family of “tailleurs” (tailors) as her deceased father had been one … and, could this be the reason that John King was a tailor?
