« on: Sunday 28 January 18 19:38 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I am trying to researching my relatives army records and where he served in the army ?  His names was Martin Abraham born 1792 in Roscommon Ireland.  He joined the British Army for Life and served in the 58Th Foot Soldiers he died in Bolton in 1855 a Chelsea pensioner.

I would love any help or advice

Thank you in advance

Looking at the deployment records for the 58th....looks like he would have served in Jamaica from 1816 to 1822....on returning to England..he was discharged to pension after suffering illness whilst in Jamaica.

He served from 1812...the deployment of the 58th is as follows
1812   Peninsular war: east coast
    1812   American war: Canadian frontier
    1815   Netherlands
    1815   Ireland
    1815.12   58th Regiment of Foot
redesignated on disbandment of 2nd Battalion and absorbed its personnel)
    1816   Jamaica
    1822   England

Note that Ancestry has 2 records for him in the so-called "Canada, British Regimental Registers of Service" data set. One is for "Mar Abraham", the other for "Martin Abrim". They also have him in "British Army Muster Books and Pay Lists, 1812-1817 " as Martin Abraham (there is also a Samuel Abraham who might be related).

Ah! another 'West Indian'. Recently a (2nd) cousin employed a professional genealogist to push back the results of my researches from the 1740's. A brother to our gggrandfather (1792) was identified born 1785. He joined the 90th Regiment Perthshire Volunteers (Light Infantry) (2nd battalion) in 1803/4 at Abergavenny, Mon. He was soon transferred to 1st Battalion under orders for the West Indies. The West Indies was a virtual death sentence due to yellow fever, malaria and the rest of it. Our man was lucky to survive until 1818 when he was discharged due to ill health. reason given was generally service in the WI and specifically amnesia. Still he married in 1823, raised a family and died sometime between 1841(C) and 1851(C). Must be a lot of descendants walking around today.
