Garwelfoot, Scotland.

I had second thoughts on whether Garrelfoot = Garwellfoot, but doing a bit of googling I notice a couple of different references to a "William Douglas" of both "Garrelfoot" and "Garwellfoot" so it seems to be the same place.

I think the 1750 map I linked to might be a bit inaccurate. I can't align it with more recent maps at all to try to find where Garrel/Garwell-foot was. It doesn't seem to exist after 1750ish.

I thought there might be a location clue as on the 1750 map I can see "Tearth Water" beside Garrelfoot. Googling Tearth water throws up all sorts of irrelevant results. I can't see it marked on any other maps.

A couple of places on the 1750 map still exist today. I think being flexible regarding the location might be the best approach as I think the mapmaker used a bit of artistic licence.

Something that may or may not be relevant is that on maps around the mid 1800s is a Garvald Burn which you can follow on maps NE from Fernyhaugh. Maybe Garvald sounds a bit like Garwell? Maybe a coincidence?

On the 1750 map it looks like Garrelfoot is just NW of Ingraston, but I suspect it might be further away than it appears.

Added: obviously Garvald House is built later but I was wondering if the name was taken from an earlier settlement/farmstead? 

Added: I have also found mention of Water of Tairth in relation to Garrelfoot, which is presumably the Tearth Water marked on the 1750 map.

hi dont know if this is any help if you go to  https://scotlandsplaces.gov.uk and in the search box key in the various spellings ruskie mentioned eg garwelfoot, garrelfoot, garrel, and any others you may have under  garwelfoot a horse tax record comes up for 1785-1798 a colinal shutterwood and under garrelfoot the colnel shutterwood has a sevant tax with names on it also some other records you will need to click on them for names some may tie in with who you are looking for its a free site to use

Ruskie, I think the Garrelfoot you found on the old maps is the correct place (per OP info) and that the link above, whilst a different Garrel, supports the name change from Garrelfoot to Garvald.  That's my vote anyway

Thank-you to everyone who found some very interesting information and old maps.
Dates for the three births that state Garwelfoot as the birthplace are 1794,  1796 and 1802. That confirms that the place was still there at that time.
