Charles H. Mackay - Edinburgh
« on: Monday 29 January 18 10:58 GMT (UK) »
I have came across a Charles H. Mackay, in the Edinburgh and Leith PO Directory of 1884 as staying at 34 St. Andrew Square, Edinburgh. Tried to find him in the 1881 and 1891 census to no avail, anyone came across this guy? Any help with him would be much appreciated, ta.

With William's details and use the middle name Hope, I think this Charles is in England by at least the early 1900s. An entry from 1911 here https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XW2L-R9K (you now need to sign in to view index).

Possible death for this Charles in the Pancras area of London in 1917, aged 76 - ref 1b/79.

The 1911 census found by Monica shows a birth in Thurso - the Charles Hope Mckay whose probate is quoted above would appear according to census records to have been born in London (Francis Annie Gauld would seem to have been his niece - maiden surname McKay and born in Leicester) - he can be identified in all the family home in all censuses up to 1891 - except 1881- living with his parents and or siblings. Have not located him as yet in 1901.

In 1881 this may be him in Edinburgh (as per free LDS 1881 census on SP) Address 59 Frederick Street

Charles H MC Kay Lodger U 39M Agent born England
(Head of household is Elizabeth Waters 43 year old widow and lodging house keeper).

It is only a short walk from Frederick Street to St Andrew Square.

This all makes sense, he was a Commission Agent for Lambert and Butler of London, when in Edinburgh. His office was at 34 St. Andrew Square, and he keep lodgings in 59 Frederick Street. It would appear, that he left Edinburgh in either 1889/90, as an agent he would travel around the country. I have him in Edinburgh in 1883/1884. And the dates for his death in 1917 and the age on the 1881 census correspond. Thanks for this.

He shows in the Ediburgh Post Office Directories up to the 1888-89 one www.archive.org/stream/postofficeedinbu18881889edin#page/174/mode/2up which fits with what you mention.
