James Watts - Saint Mary's Lambeth
« on: Monday 29 January 18 12:24 GMT (UK) »
Hi, could anyone point me in the right direction or give me some advice where I can find more information about James Watts and this attached article in the Gazette? James was born/baptised in St Marys, Lambeth, in 1777. That's all the information I have found on James so far. His father was William, a gardener, his mother was Amey/Amy, and he had a brother called William and a sister called Sarah. I found the article on google, a PDF, page number but no date. I'm guessing as it says James is under 21 years, and finished his apprenticeship in 1792, the article must be between 1792 and 1798? Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Can't help with information about the WATTS family, but the item you have is from the London Gazette volume 1, published in 1819. You can see it here on google books.

I think it's probably to do with a dispute over the estate of William Watts (see his PCC will proved in 1780) following the death of his widow Amey. I can't find a record of Watts v Green at first pass.

Thank you both for your input. I think I'll have to sit on this and wait for something to appear.

"Watts against Green & others": Ann Green, wife of James Green, was one of James Watts' sisters (per William Watts' will)

I’ve seen the will. My 4xGGF is a William Watts, I’m trying to confirm if the William Watts who died 1780, is my 5xGGF as he had a son called William Watts, born roughly the same time as my William Watts, according to the 1841 Census. My 4xGGF’s wife’s father was a Gardener, also in Lambeth, which may just be a coincidence. I’m trying to find the link that ties them together. I have only managed to find a will for a James Green ‘Gentleman’ of Lambeth. Ann Green’s husband was a gardener when they married. In the will of James Green, 1813, his wife is Ann but I can not be sure it’s my James Green the status of a Gardener to a Gentleman seems unlikely. James Watts had another half sister called Mary Lanceley, I am having difficulty locating her, her husband Richard and son William. With James Watts, I am hoping there is a link, somewhere in the paperwork of the ‘Watts against Green and others’ that would prove of disprove, his brother William being my 4xGGF.

Got that, I can’t find them after, couldn’t find a death/burial for Richard. I found a marriage for a ‘Mary Lanchly’, 1784, to a William Wells, St John’s Horsleydowns.

They had a daughter, Sarah Honey Lanceley but she passed away 1776.
