That is a very good point, I hadn't thought of that and on the Leighton Buzzard census records Alice seems to be quite a rare name. Thank you for pointing that out as it makes the link seem quite likely. Thank you for all of your help.

Thank you for all of the searches you have done on my behalf and for your insight into what was possible going on. It was like a pile of spaghetti and you have helped to untangle it all, I am really grateful to you.

I think you are right re the baby Ned actually being Charles.

Bricklaying seems to run in the Cosby family as does sand and whiting dealing so it seems to be passed on and it does seem like a tantalising link between them all. My other Cosbys found else where don't do the same. I will load them all to my test now in the order that they seem to apear for testing again later.

It will be great if more information comes on line as it leaves hope that we might be able to get to the bottom of it, I find an unsolved mystery hard to deal with. It is a shame they didn't have certificates before then as going back before early 1700s and 1600s is really difficult. The furthest I hav got back with any certainty on another family line is 1705. I would love to get back to the Saxons or Vikings!!!

Thanks for the heads up about Jabez, I wondered if perhaps Caleb and Jabez had been transported so I took a quick look, there is a Jabiz Cosby Arriving in Australia but I only have the UK version of ancestry and so am not sure of the year so will take a look on Trove.

I think I will need to take an appointment at the Bedfordshire Archives and see what I can find as like you say you can lean alot through witnesses too. I noticed Pratts, Parrotts and Higgenbottoms (one of the daughters marries a Higgenbottom) living next door or in the same street as the Cosbys on the census records.

You might check if your local public library subscribes to Ancestry Library Edition. It generally covers world records, if I remember correctly. Bedford Archives may have it too or findmypast, you never know. If you are near a family history center (the familysearch folks) they may have subs to either one or both as well.

You do remember correctly PB.  I've used Library Edition here in Australia, and I only look at English records.
