Frederick Joseph Tucker married Esther Colgan - convert to RC

Hopefully somebody  can shed some light on this for me.

My great x3 grandfather Frederick Joseph Tucker moved from England (St. Lukes, Bristol) in the 1800's. Unfortunately, I've no records of when, why or with whom. However, I do have his baptism record from 4th January 1893 when he was about 23. He converted to Roman Catholic to marry Esther Colgan and according to family tradition "went to mass nearly every day for the rest of his life". I'll take that with a pinch of salt. However, my question is if there is a way to see what he converted from.

Again with the oral family tradition I was told he was Jewish. However, I keep finding baptism records with his details in Bristol. I know there were convert rolls kept over from Penal times but these stop in 1845. Does anybody know of a way to confirm what religion he converted from?

While his granddaughter is still alive in her late 90's she doesn't have much information about him beyond what I have here. She was the one who mentioned him being Jewish to her son years ago.

Hello,

You write that you keep finding baptism records in Bristol. Are they CoE? Who are his parents on those records?
I see he gives his parents as John and Martha on his baptism records but names his father as Joseph on his marriage record.
I can see a child with parents J and M in Bristol in 1881 but he is Frederick P according to the census.
Joseph may have been his confirmation name but he dies call himself by that name later rather than Frederick.

Find My Past has military records which may be Frederick.
The dates shown are:
1901 St Luke’s Bristol
1888 Axminster

They may not be him but worth checking as they may give a religious denomination.

The marriage in 1893 January, for Frederick Joseph, there is one, he was at the Ship Street Barracks, the ladies name is not Esther Colgan.
Have you got his marriage certificate?

Here is the marriage of FJ Tucker to Jane Dolan which fits with the Frederick P Tucker in Bristol whose father is John, brushmaker.

Yes, there are 3 Joseph Tucker's, the 1901 census that you have, I got, then the 1911.
He should have just kept Frederick!

Frederick Tucker and Jane b Wicklow with children mmn Dolan.

So it looks as though Frederick P Tucker b Bristol and Frederick Joseph (baptism) son of John the brushmaker is the same man and he married Jane Dolan.
