School, Infant or Elementary, St Philips, Hoxton or Islington c1880?
« on: Monday 29 January 18 13:34 GMT (UK) »
My great aunt Kate Charlotte Cox born 1874, daughter of Henry Pilbeam Cox and Kate, moved from Wenlock Street Hoxton to Arlington St Islington between Nov 1880 and April 1881. Her father enrolled her at Hanover Street Girls' School on July 1 1882. Formerly, she had been at St Philips. They were very much CofE, later Baptists, so it is unlikely to have been a RC school. Can you suggest possible St Philips neat Wenlock area Hoxton or Arlington St Islington which, as an infant, she may have gone to? Her sister Eleanor also went to Hanover Street on 23 July 1883, from the Infants.
I'm very grateful to all you sleuths!
All above info has come from 1881 census and LMA school admissions records.

St Philip the Evangelist National School (= C. of E.)
Hale Street (now Rees Street, London N1), close to Arlington Square.

The link posted above shows that the school closed in 1911 and the building was returned to the parish. So try contacting Islington Local History Centre (at the Finsbury Library in St John Street). They have a very large collection of photographs.

Thanks Bookbox. The school she went to next, Hanover Street, looked most impressive in "The Builder." I bet my own school, Belmont Road in Chiswick looked the same in the architect's drawing. I remember the reality as something rather grim c the time of the Coronation! National Schools were much more varied, depending on when and where they were built.
