My 2x great grandmother Kate Cox, who lived in Caversham Road Reading, before and after 1901 was presented with the service medal of her deceased son Henry, a Royal Berks Volunteer, who died in Pretoria in the Boer War in 1900. She lived at 149 Caversham Road Reading with Henry's father Henry Pilbeam Cox, a local Weights and Measures Inspector. The cottages where she received the medal in September 1901 are not in Berks but in the parish of Rotherfield Greys in Henley RDC in Oxfordshire. This information was found on the medal roll in the NA at Kew. Why would a medal be presented in the wrong county for the soldier or his parents? Could these cottages have belonged to Berks and be used as a convalescent place? Henry snr had lost his job soon after and following the premature death of his second son in 1905, killed himself in 1906. The Archivists in Berks and Oxon can shed no light on this mystery.
