Who lived at Powis House in 1881 & 1891
« on: Monday 29 January 18 19:16 GMT (UK) »
Hello Chatters,

Can someone more adept at the Aberdeen census help me figure out who was living at Powis House (11 Powis Cir, Aberdeen) in the 1881 and 1891 census please?

I have a picture of some people seated on the steps of Powis House, Aberdeen. The photo was taken sometime between 1880 and 1890. My great great grandmother is in the photo with a woman with 5 children.

Hugh Fraser Leslie built the house & died in 1873, leaving most of his estate to his sisters (who do not appear to have married). I haven't been able to discern if the house was sold on his death.

Thanks in advance for any help identifying who was living at Powis House in 1881 and 1891.

The first link mentions the Arbuthnot family. They might be worth a look.

Thank you very much Malky & Monica. It's great to meet up with here again - it has been some time since I've been around. :)

Is there any way to tell when the George Burnett family moved into the house? Also, at Malky's suggestion, when the Arbuthnot family moved in?

Re the Arbuthnots :-

http://www.scottish-places.info/scotgaz/people/famousfirst3759.html

so one would think, if the Burnetts were there, it must have been between 1891 and 1912. Or then again maybe not.

Suggest you look at the newspaper archive and search for Burnett and Powis House (also worth searching for Leslie and Powis House in Aberdeen papers).

The obituary of Mrs J G Burnett in 1944 (husband had been MP for North Aberdeen) states " On their marriage in 1901 they moved into Powis House and lived there until a few years ago when they moved to Powis Gate".
