Hi

To save us all choosing the wrong lookups . . . . .

"on the census ( ? which one ?) he gives his occupation as ...Hoisery Manufacturer ..would he have had some sort of factory ? or worked from home ? grateful for any help"

What were his relevant dates?
Have you tried the trade directories? Fone directories? local papers?

Great Glen is very near to Wigston where there were many hosiery factories and a large number of the people living there would have been frame work knitters.
Not sure if there was a hosiery factory in Great Glen but he could have had out workers who worked their frames at home.  The framework museum in Wigston may help or the Leicestershire records office also in Wigston.
