Mary Holland - convict - tried in Surrey
« on: Tuesday 30 January 18 13:37 GMT (UK) »
Hi lovely people of Rootschat.  Been a while since I was on here and not sure how to post a message for a new person.  I am looking for any family member in the uk of "Mary Holland" Convict. of Surrey or that is where she was tried.  Looking for parents or siblings.  Mary Holland was arrested for stealing bed sheets and a cotton counterpane in 1794 at age 19 (could be 26) and tried in Surrey, UK. Mary was found guilty and sentenced to 7 years transportation to New South Wales, Australia. She departed England in October, 1795 with 130 other convicts and arrived in Sydney on the "Indispensable" in 1796. Was listed as a Catholic.  Any help please.  Thanks Joany

Thank you.  I have been searching for days and we have about 5 different birthdates as it looks as though she did not know how old she actually was.  It mentions regarding her trial in 1794 that she was 19.  When she arrived in Australia on record says she is 20 and another says she is 26.  Also it states on a convict record for supplies that she was 50 in 1828.  There has been put an incorrect Mary Holland's mother on WikiTree through a .ged filed so this started off this search.  You people have always come through for me so thought I would try. One record on Geni states her birthdate is 10th April 1764 in Morpeth Northumberland. She was tried in Surrey.  Will keep looking and hope you can help me.  I will let you know if I find anything and hope you will too.  Thanks  Joany

Surrey History Centre 130 Goldsworth Road, Woking, England, GU21 6ND, looks like they hold records for Quarter Session Assizes, might have more details on Mary's trial.

It might be worth you contacting them (explain that you are in Australia) and see what they say.

I don't think many people on here visit Surrey History centre.  ::)
