Truro Diocesan maternity home, Mount Prospect, Redruth
« on: Tuesday 30 January 18 15:41 GMT (UK) »
Hi. I am trying to pinpoint where Mount Prospect was/is in Redruth please. I understand it was a home for unmarried mothers and my great gran gave birth to my gran here in 1918 aged 17.
Also does anyone know what Parc Vean house may have been in Redruth around the same time? Was it simply a domestic house or something grander? This is the address she gave on my grans birth certificate as to where she was living at the time.

Thanks in advance

If you do a search for "Parc Vean house" it comes up in Coach Lane Redruth.

Looks like it was previously an hotel.  Maybe your Great was in service there depending on the time frame.

Yes that would make sense, I believe that she was in service. I have just found my grans baptism record in Redruth, St Andrew and had a look at the other baptisms and am amazed how many were single mums having babies at Mount Prospect, (wherever that is/was) and who resided at Parc Vean at the time.
My gran, (now 99) has never known who her father was and I have always wondered if it was someone she was in service with or if it was someone who went off to war and "promised" to marry her on his return but never did.
       Thanks for your input.

The 1901 Census reads " ... Cardrew lane, Cardrew Cottage, Cardrew House, Harris' Row (back), Mount Prospect, Redruth Highway, Mount Ambrose...."

Old Maps  https://www.old-maps.co.uk/index.html#/Map/170750/42893/10/101039

You can see some of the 1901 locations on the 1908 map. I think Mount Prospect is somewhere along the road leading from Buller's Terrace north to Mount Ambrose.
I've also checked the 1911 Census but cannot post details (policy).

Thank you, I will look at the maps on my PC tomorrow.

Is there a later Kelly's directory than 1902 that can be accessed?

Man6 thanks for your help  :)

Yes - 1914 and I did get a "hit" for Parc Vean. However, when I saw the actual entry there had been an OCR misread - the original was "Parc Mean (Helston)".
I also checked the 1911 Census but no householder in Church Lane had included "Parc Vean" in their address (Tom Moore, in the 1902 Directory and on the 1901 Census had moved by then).

You can check these Directories on line at "Historical Directories".

The Cornishman - 30 Aug 1917

One of the death notices describes the deceased as " ... a nephew of Mrs Sanders, Parcvean, Redruth ...".
