I then have a marriage for John in 1891 at Chadron Nebraska to a Mary M Murphy born 1871 in New York:

Whilst John gives his birthplace as Kentucky it is the correct John because he gives his mothers maiden name as Tilsley. 

After the 1891 census I have found nothing else on John or Mary.  Any help appreciated.

Perhaps the above John is not your man (or they didn't know where his parents were born) or there were three J W Footes living in Salt Lake?

Looking at the death certificate, his parents' information was not known.  He had lived in the city (Salt Lake) 32 years at the time of his death. It appears that he was buried in Los Angeles.

Lisa, thanks so much for the information.  I did find the later census information a few days ago when tracing Maggie Hertzog who was indeed a sister to the John W Foote I am tracing so that must be him on the 1900 census.  Maggie is also on the 1900 census a few days later in Jasper Iowa 1100 miles from Salt Lake City?

I had not found the 1897 marriage - this was Delia (or Adelia) Nixon who had previously married a Joseph Hutchinson in 1892 and was a father to the Juanita on the 1870 census.  Where was the details of the 1897 marriage to Delia from?

From the finding the 1900 census I did see the 1910 & 1920 census but could not make make much sense of them so had not added them to my tree as yet.

The death certificate is a good find and fascinating!  Why?  Well the father of the John W Foote I am tracing, Andrew Foote (1844 England) died and was buried in Los Angeles in 1912?  But if he was being shipped to Los Angeles for burial with his father, wife Florence would have known where he was going?

Forgot to mention that a Millennium file on Delia Nixon mentions a marriage to a Jack Foote (no details and the birth of a son - I assume of John/Jack - Lynn:
