James PEARSON, born 1837, Lyng, Norfolk and Middlesex(??)
« on: Wednesday 31 January 18 20:42 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

The origins of this gentleman are a little obscure, except he had an Aunt, Mrs BARLEY, who was a Beer House Keeper at Lynn Road, Wisbech, Cambridgeshire in the 1850's.  He had been a tearaway as a youth, 5 or 6 times summarily convicted, but on 10/04/1850 at the Isle of Ely Sessions he was sentenced to 10 years transportation which was commuted and he was released early from prison on 21/05/1855.

I am not totally certain but the 1861 Census (RG9/4434/125, p.6) confirms he is an Able Seaman with the Royal Navy in Shanghai, China, and by the 1871 Census he appears to be married to 32 year old Emma and has two children James 4 and Emma 8 months and is employed as a Mariner.   He now lives in Islington, Middlesex (RG10/308/59, p.47).

I wonder if someone can help prove I have the correct person and, if at all possible, extend the details on either side from 1837 to 1850 (parents etc.) and after 1871.

Thank you

1871 Census he appears to be married to 32 year old Emma and has two children James 4 and Emma 8 months and is employed as a Mariner.   He now lives in Islington, Middlesex (RG10/308/59, p.47).

Likely birth registrations of James and Emma give mother's maiden surname as Ibbott.
So the marriage for them should be
6 May 1865, Islington St Jude
Julian James Pearson, 29, Bachelor, Seaman, father John Pearson, Farmer
+
Emma Ibbott, 28, Spinster, father John Ibbott, Bookbinder
residence for both 5 Balls Pond Road

There's a baptism at Wisbech St Peter, 1 December 1835
Julian James Pearson
parents John and Sarah
father a Bargeman

Might be the 5 year old James Pearson in Wisbech in 1841

Emma Pearson, 45, seems to be widowed in 1881, still in Islington with the two children, James A, 14, and Emma A, 10.

Looks like the aunt could be Ann Barley whose husband Edward was a beer retailer and cowkeeper in Lynn Road, Wisbech, in 1851
A marriage of Ann Pearson to Edward Barley at Wisbech St Peter, but in 1849. She was 46 and her father was John Pearson late of Wisbech St Peter formerly of Lynn, Sailor. That's a lot of info!
You can see the BT of the marriage here (must be logged in of course)

jonw65,

Some excellent information/research.   Thank you very much.   I am extremely grateful.

I hope it is the same person, although the seafaring aspect seems fairly conclusive.
